Sleeping Beauty, NUGEN Design Competition

Project name

Sleeping Beauty, NUGEN Design Competition

Location

West Cumbria, England, UK

Summary

Earlier this year NuGen invited Landscape Architects to come up with ideas for the landscape mounds associated Europe’s largest nuclear power station. As part of its commitment to good design, NuGen is looking for the most creative and sustainable design ideas for the mounds, which will provide the setting for Moorside Power Station. The shortlisted ideas were selected by an independent panel of experts, including Sir Terry Farrell and Paul Tiplady (former Chief Executive of the Lake District National Park Authority).

Full Description

The design celebrates the character of western Cumbria, creating a series of fluted interlocking landforms, with waterbodies between, reminiscent of the kames, drumlins and kettle‐holes evident in this glaciated landscape. The landforms will incorporate elements drawn from the local vernacular of stone walls, wind‐swept thorn trees and the delightfully warm local red sandstone, creating a flexible landscape, rich in diversity and opportunity.

It will encompass visitor spaces, public footpaths, look outs, science gardens, foci for outdoor study, amphitheatres for performance; set within a framework of woodlands, wildflower pastures, and a diversity of semi‐natural habitats, mosses, watercourses and tarns.

The design addresses the interface between the publicly accessible space to the north and the secure energy landscape to the south. The proposal creates a sense of mystery and drama, drawing inspiration from the fairy tale of a hidden castle surrounded by a forest of trees, shielding it from the outside world.
